Everything you need for a Muscat to Salalah trip in 2026–27: both airlines and their fares, the Omani fare, what the cheapest ticket includes, flight vs the 1,000 km drive vs the bus, the National Day long weekend, a three-day winter plan for Salalah — and how SKY LINE TRAVEL books it in one message.
Most people think of Salalah in summer, when the Khareef monsoon turns the Dhofar mountains green and more than a million visitors drive and fly south. But the season that is starting now may be the better one. From October to April, Salalah has blue skies, daytime highs in the high twenties, a sea warm enough to swim in every day — and far fewer crowds than in July.
This guide covers everything you need to get there from Muscat: which airlines fly the route and what they really charge, the special fare for Omani citizens, what the cheapest ticket includes, whether to fly, drive or take the bus, and a three-day winter plan for Salalah. Wherever you see a booking button, it leads to the SKY LINE TRAVEL desk in Muscat — one message, both airlines compared, and your e-ticket the same day.
Route status — 9 October 2026: Muscat–Salalah flights are operating normally on both Oman Air and SalamAir. Khareef 2026 ended on 21 September and Dhofar is now in the Sarb season: the hills are still green in October, skies are clearing and winter starts. Book early for the National Day long weekend (25–28 November) — it is the first big peak of the winter.

Which airlines fly from Muscat to Salalah?
Two airlines fly Muscat International (MCT) to Salalah International (SLL), and between them they offer around seven to ten non-stop flights a day outside the Khareef season. The flight takes about an hour and forty minutes, so you can leave Muscat after breakfast and be on a Salalah beach for lunch.
| Airline | Style | Cheapest fare includes | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oman Air (WY) | Full service, oneworld | Super Saver: 7 kg cabin bag, no checked bag | Flights spread through the day; Comfort fare adds 20 kg, Flex 30 kg |
| SalamAir (OV) | Low cost | Lite: 5 kg under-seat bag only | Value bundle adds 20 kg, Flexi 30 kg; new Salalah base from October 2026 |
In summer the airlines add many more seats — during Khareef 2026 Oman Air flew up to 13 flights a day and SalamAir up to 15 — but in winter the schedule is lighter, so the popular morning and Thursday-evening flights fill first. SalamAir also flies Sohar–Salalah daily, handy if you live in Al Batinah. There is no direct flight from Duqm; connect through Muscat.

How much is a flight from Muscat to Salalah?
In early October 2026, Oman Air was showing one-way fares from OMR 34 for travel between October and January, and from OMR 40 in February. Across both airlines, winter one-way fares usually start around OMR 30–40, and return tickets on ordinary dates land around OMR 60–80. Holiday weekends cost more, and July and August, in the middle of Khareef, are the most expensive months of the year. November is usually the cheapest.
The Omani fare: special prices for citizens
Both airlines offer fixed fares for Omani citizens, booked only on the airline’s own website or app and checked against the Omani ID card at the airport:
| Airline | One way | Return | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| SalamAir — Omani Fare (all year) | From OMR 9.99 without a bag; OMR 13.99 with 20 kg | From OMR 29.99; up to OMR 56.99 with 20 kg | Omani nationals only; limited seats; choose “Omani Fare” when booking |
| Oman Air — national fare | OMR 32 | OMR 54 (Khareef); around OMR 64 at other times | Omani citizens; proof of nationality at booking and check-in |
Important for residents: these fares are for Omani nationals only. SalamAir states that resident-card holders who book the Omani Fare will be refused at the airport. If you are an expatriate or a visitor, book a normal fare — ask us and we will find the cheapest one for your dates.
Baggage: what your Salalah ticket includes
On the domestic route, neither airline includes a checked bag on its cheapest fare. That is fine for a weekend with a backpack, but a family with suitcases should compare the fares with bags, not the headline price.
| Fare | Cabin | Checked bag |
|---|---|---|
| SalamAir Lite | 5 kg under-seat bag (25×33×20 cm) | None |
| SalamAir Saver | 10 kg trolley bag | None |
| SalamAir Value | 10 kg trolley bag | 20 kg |
| SalamAir Flexi | 10 kg trolley bag | 30 kg |
| Oman Air Super Saver | 7 kg | None |
| Oman Air Comfort | 7 kg | 20 kg |
| Oman Air Flex | 7 kg | 30 kg |
- Buy extra baggage in advance. At the airport it costs much more per kilo than online or through us.
- Bringing frankincense, dates or Salalah bananas home? Leave room in your allowance — the souq is hard to resist.
- Check in on time: both airlines close their counters 60 minutes before departure; SalamAir’s bag drop closes at 90 minutes.

Flight, car or bus: the best way from Muscat to Salalah
The road to Salalah is a rite of passage for many families in Oman — about 1,000 kilometres through the desert via Adam, Haima and Thumrait. It can be a great adventure, but it is a long day, and in 2026 part of it is a construction site.
| Flight | Car | Bus (Mwasalat) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time | About 1 h 40 in the air, plus the airports | 12–13 hours with stops; many split it over two days | About 12–13 hours |
| Cost one way | From about OMR 30–40; Omanis from OMR 9.99 | Fuel about OMR 25–35 for a sedan, plus any rental | OMR 8 (OMR 12.500 return) |
| Best for | Weekends, National Day, business trips | Families of 3–4 who want their own car in Dhofar | Budget solo travellers |
| Watch out for | No checked bag on the cheapest fares | Roadworks and a long gap between fuel stations | A long day or overnight journey |
If you drive, know the road before you go. The Haima–Thumrait section is being upgraded to a dual carriageway — the Ministry of Transport’s project runs to 2028 — so expect work zones, diversions and heavy trucks on the last 400 kilometres. Fill up completely at Haima: the next reliable fuel can be around 370 km away. Leave early, avoid driving at night (camels and unlit stretches), take a break every hour and a half, and carry water and some cash.
The Mwasalat bus (route 100) leaves Azaiba bus station at 07:00 and 18:00, stops at Muscat airport and reaches Salalah about 12–13 hours later; book on the Mwasalat app or website. For most short trips, though, the plane wins: you gain a whole day of holiday in each direction.
Why visit Salalah in winter
From November to February, Salalah’s daytime temperatures sit in the high twenties, nights drop to a pleasant 16–22 °C, and the sea stays at 25–28 °C — swimmable all winter, with very little rain. October is the Sarb season, when the Khareef mist has gone but the mountains are still green. It is also beach season: hotels on the coast fill with visitors from Europe on winter charter flights, so book your hotel early too.
- Al Baleed Archaeological Park and the Museum of the Frankincense Land — part of the UNESCO-listed Land of Frankincense, right in the city, with one ticket for both (about OMR 3).
- Al Mughsail beach and the Marneef blowholes — 40 minutes west: a long white beach under limestone cliffs. The blowholes are strongest with rough seas.
- Wadi Darbat — in winter, calm blue pools and boat rides instead of the big Khareef waterfall.
- Taqah, Sumhuram (Khor Rori) and Mirbat — castles, an ancient frankincense port and an old harbour town on one east-coast day.
- Al Haffa souq — frankincense of every grade, burners and attar. Go in the evening; many shops close around midday.
- Fresh coconuts and Salalah bananas from the roadside stalls on Sultan Qaboos Street behind Al Haffa beach.
- Fazayah beach — one of the most beautiful beaches in Oman, beyond Mughsail, on a steep track best done in a 4×4.

| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 — City and frankincense | Al Baleed Archaeological Park and the Museum of the Frankincense Land | Fresh coconut at the Al Haffa stalls, then the beach | Al Haffa souq for frankincense and dinner in town |
| Day 2 — West coast | Al Mughsail beach and the Marneef blowholes | Fazayah beach by 4×4, or the Prophet Job’s tomb in the hills | Sunset over the Arabian Sea |
| Day 3 — East coast | Wadi Darbat and Ain Razat spring | Taqah Castle and Sumhuram (Khor Rori) | Mirbat’s old harbour, then back to the hotel |
Arriving in Salalah: airport, car hire and getting around
Salalah International Airport opened in 2015 and is about 10 km from the city centre. Its official airport taxis charge fixed fares — about OMR 7 to the city centre, OMR 15 to Taqah and OMR 30 to Mirbat. The main sights are spread 25–75 km east and west of the city, so a hire car is the easiest way to see them; Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt have desks in arrivals, and it is worth reserving in advance, especially for an SUV. Yango and the local Tasleem app work for taxis; Uber does not operate in Oman.
