Is there a best day to buy a plane ticket from Muscat? This guide explains how fares really move, what the big 2026 booking studies say, how early to book for Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, India and Pakistan, which holiday weeks to avoid — National Day, Diwali, the December school break, Ramadan and Eid — and how to let fare alerts and airline sales do the work for you.
Everyone in Muscat has a theory about cheap flights: book on a Tuesday, book at midnight, wait for the last minute. Most of these tips come from old forum posts or American data. The truth is less magical but more useful: fares from Muscat follow demand, the calendar and how many seats are left in the cheapest price bucket — and once you understand those three things, you can time your booking well almost every time.
This guide puts together what the largest booking studies of 2026 found, what they do not tell you about the Gulf, and the dates that push fares up from Oman this winter and next year: National Day on 25–26 November 2026, Diwali, the December school break, Ramadan and both Eids. Then we go route by route — Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, India and Pakistan — and finish with fare alerts and airline sales. Every figure comes from a named source.
Checked on 13 October 2026. Airline schedules, fuel surcharges and holiday dates change. Islamic holidays depend on the moon sighting and are announced shortly before. Use this guide to plan, then check the live price — or send us your route and we check it for you.

How airline fares really move
An airline does not set one price for a flight. It splits the economy cabin into several fare classes — price levels with their own rules, each marked by a booking letter. A few seats are loaded at the lowest level, more at the next, and so on. When the cheapest level sells out, it closes and the next, more expensive level appears on your screen. That is why the same flight can cost very different amounts a week apart.
- Demand decides, not the calendar page. If a flight sells fast, the airline can close its cheap levels early. If it sells slowly, it can reopen them or add seats at a low price — which is why fares sometimes drop.
- Low-cost airlines price each direction separately. On SalamAir, Air India Express or IndiGo a return ticket is usually two one-way fares, so you can mix airlines without losing a discount.
- Fuel and taxes move the floor. In October 2026 IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express raised their fuel surcharge on Gulf routes to Rs 5,500 — about OMR 22 more per ticket on flights to Oman, according to the Oman Observer.
How far ahead should you book from Muscat?
The two biggest 2026 studies disagree. Google’s October 2026 analysis of five years of Google Flights data found that international fares were lowest about 89 days before departure, with a low range from 50 to 133 days. Expedia’s 2026 Air Hacks report found the cheapest international economy tickets 8 to 15 days out, and said that booking 31 to 45 days ahead still beat booking six months ahead. Both studies measure trips from the United States, so neither is a rule for Muscat.
What they share is more useful: booking very early rarely wins, and the cheapest window is wide. For Muscat we use the windows below — our desk’s rule of thumb, not a promise.
| Trip | Normal weeks | Peak weeks | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dubai, Doha (one-hour hops) | 2–4 weeks | 6–8 weeks | Many daily flights keep fares flat outside holidays |
| Istanbul and Europe | 6–12 weeks | 3–4 months | Fewer daily seats; in Google’s data Europe was cheapest 49+ days out |
| India and Pakistan | 4–8 weeks | 8–12 weeks | School holidays and Eid fill cheap seats early |
| National Day long weekend | — | 6–8 weeks | Short trips for the whole country at once |
| Family of four or more | Earlier than usual | As soon as dates are fixed | Few seats left at the lowest level |

Last-minute deals are rare on Gulf routes. Unsold seats close to departure are usually sold at the higher levels, especially in the weeks before Eid and school holidays. At short notice, compare all airlines and nearby airports — or message us.
Which days are cheaper — to book and to fly?
The day you book matters very little. Google’s 2026 data found Wednesday the cheapest day to buy, but only about 1.4% cheaper than Sunday; Expedia’s U.S. data named Friday. That is less than the jump when one fare level sells out, so never wait for a certain weekday to pay for a fare you like.
The day you fly matters much more. In Google’s data, leaving on a Monday and returning on a Tuesday or Wednesday saved about 14% against weekend flights. Oman’s weekend is Friday and Saturday, while the UAE’s is Saturday and Sunday, so the busy departure times from Muscat are different from those in American studies. In our experience, Thursday evening and the night before a public holiday are the most expensive times to leave Muscat, and Saturday evening is the expensive time to come back.
- Open the full-month calendar on the airline or comparison site before choosing a date — a day earlier or later can be in a cheaper fare level.
- Compare one-stop flights. Google found non-stop tickets about 20% more expensive on average than connecting ones. On long routes a connection in Doha, Dubai or Istanbul is often worth checking.
The 2026–27 dates that push fares up from Muscat
Most price jumps from Oman follow the calendar: public holidays, school breaks and festivals at both ends of the trip. Dates of Islamic holidays are estimates until they are announced.
| Dates | Event | What happens to fares |
|---|---|---|
| Around 8 Nov 2026 | Diwali | India flights fill in the first week of November |
| 25–28 Nov 2026 | Oman National Day holiday + weekend | Short trips to Dubai, Doha, Salalah and Istanbul fill early |
| 2–3 Dec 2026 | UAE Eid Al Etihad | Busy Dubai weekend |
| 4 Dec 2026 – 17 Jan 2027 | Dubai Shopping Festival | Steady demand to Dubai, peak around New Year |
| 14 Dec 2026 – 3 Jan 2027 | UAE school winter break | Gulf families travel; hubs busy |
| 20 Dec 2026 – 2 Jan 2027 | Indian schools in Oman: winter break | Biggest winter peak to India; return peak around 1–2 Jan |
| From about 8 Feb 2027 | Ramadan | Often quieter, except Umrah and the last days |
| About 9–10 Mar 2027 | Eid al-Fitr | Strong peak in both directions |
| About 16–17 May 2027 | Eid al-Adha | Strong peak; may overlap with school holidays |
| Late May – July | Summer school break | The year’s biggest exodus to India and Pakistan |

Quieter windows, when the cheapest fare levels are most often open, usually fall between the holidays: the second half of October and early November outside Diwali week, mid-January to early February, the first weeks of Ramadan, and September after the summer return. These are patterns, not guarantees, and they differ by route.
Book Eid trips before the dates are official. Oman announces Eid holidays only days before, but airlines sell the seats months ahead. Choose dates that work for both possible Eid days, or pick a fare that allows changes.
Route by route: Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, India and Pakistan
Muscat to Dubai
About an hour and ten minutes, and more competition than any other route from Muscat: Oman Air and flydubai fly every day, several times a day between them, Emirates sells seats too, and the low-cost airlines SalamAir and Air Arabia also connect Muscat with the UAE (check whether your flight lands at Dubai or at Sharjah). Fares stay fairly flat on normal weeks, so two to four weeks ahead is usually enough. Book earlier for the National Day weekend, Eid Al Etihad, the Dubai Shopping Festival and New Year. See also hotels in Dubai.
Muscat to Doha
Oman Air and Qatar Airways both fly non-stop, each about two or three times a day, in roughly an hour and a half. With fewer airlines than Dubai, watch the fare from about six weeks out and book when it dips. Doha is also a hub: a ticket to Europe or Asia via Doha is sometimes cheaper than a non-stop. For a stay, compare hotels in Doha.
Muscat to Istanbul
Turkish Airlines flies daily to Istanbul Airport, Oman Air four or five times a week, and Pegasus — and, by recent schedules, SalamAir — fly to Sabiha Gökçen on the Asian side. The flight is about five hours. With a long summer peak, Christmas and New Year and only a few flights a day, cheap seats go earlier: start watching two to three months ahead. Sabiha Gökçen fares can be lower, but it is far from the European side. See hotels in Istanbul.
Muscat to India and Pakistan
Muscat’s busiest family routes are also the most seasonal. Around Eid al-Adha and the start of the school summer in May 2026, fares on several Oman–India routes rose by 20–50% and one-way tickets reached OMR 100–150 on busy days, while Mumbai stayed near OMR 55–65 because more airlines compete on it (Curly Tales, citing industry estimates). For Pakistan, SalamAir is the only airline flying to all six cities. Our guides to Muscat–India and Muscat–Pakistan flights list every route.
Low-cost or full-service: which is really cheaper?
A low-cost ticket often wins for a short trip with a cabin bag; a full-service fare that already includes a suitcase can be cheaper in the end for a family or for uncertain dates.
| Low-cost (SalamAir, flydubai, Air Arabia, IndiGo, Air India Express) | Full-service (Oman Air, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Emirates) | |
|---|---|---|
| Headline fare | Usually lowest | Often higher, more included |
| Checked bag on cheapest fare | Usually not included | Included on many routes |
| Return ticket | Two one-ways, easy to mix airlines | A return can be cheaper than two one-ways |
| Date changes | Fee plus fare difference | Depends on fare; flexible fares cost more up front |
Always compare the total: fare, bag, seat and the chance you will need a change. Our SalamAir vs Oman Air baggage guide shows exactly what each fare includes.
Fare alerts and airline sales: let the price come to you
Instead of searching every day, set an alert once and wait for the email. Our routine for any trip more than a month away:
- Fix your route and a range of dates, and note whether a nearby airport works for you.
- Turn on Google Flights “Track prices”. Search the route and switch on tracking for your dates, or for “Any dates” if you are flexible. Google emails you when the price changes significantly and when prices are likely to go up.
- Add a Skyscanner price alert. Sign in, search a route and date and tap “Track prices” — a second source catches airlines the first one misses.
- Follow the airlines you would fly. Oman Air and SalamAir announce sales by email and on their apps.
- Decide your target in advance. When the alert shows a fare you are happy with, book it — waiting for a lower one in a peak week usually costs more.
Airline sales from Oman follow a pattern. Oman Air ran a Global Sale in February 2026, another from 22 September to 1 October 2026 — fares from OMR 35 for travel between 1 November 2026 and 8 March 2027, plus up to 50% off extra baggage, on its own flights only (Oman Observer) — and in past years a National Day sale in November. SalamAir ran a three-day 25%-off sale in September 2026 for travel until 20 November. Both are now closed and the next has not been announced — so keep your alert running.

Cheap flights from Muscat: frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest day to book a flight from Muscat?
There is no reliable cheapest day. Google’s 2026 data found Wednesday cheapest, but only about 1.4% cheaper than Sunday. The day you fly and how early you book matter much more.
How many weeks before should I book a flight from Muscat to Dubai?
On normal weeks two to four weeks is usually enough, because many airlines fly the route. For National Day, Eid, the Dubai Shopping Festival or New Year, book six to eight weeks ahead.
When should I book flights to India for the December holidays?
The winter break at Indian schools in Oman runs from 20 December 2026 to 2 January 2027. Book as early as possible — ideally two to three months before — because cheap seats on Kerala routes go first.
Do fares drop during Ramadan?
Demand is often lower in the first weeks of Ramadan, except for Umrah. Fares rise sharply for the days around Eid al-Fitr, expected around 9–10 March 2027.
When is the Oman National Day holiday in 2026?
Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 November 2026. With the Friday–Saturday weekend that makes four days off, so short trips fill early.
