Flying from or into Muscat in 2026? This guide covers the MCT terminal, check-in opening and closing times for Oman Air and SalamAir, the 40-minute boarding-pass checkpoint, security and liquids, e-gates, immigration and customs on arrival, lounges and the Aerotel transit hotel, parking rates, taxis, the airport bus and car rental.
Muscat International Airport (MCT) is the front door of Oman. Whether you are a resident flying home for the holidays, a visitor landing for a week in the mountains, or a transit passenger with three hours between flights, the same questions come up every time: how early should I be there, when does check-in close, where is the lounge, and how much is a taxi into town?
This guide answers them with the official numbers: the airport’s own advice, the rules published by Oman Air and SalamAir, Oman Airports’ security page, the Royal Oman Police and Oman Customs. Where sources disagree — and on gate times they do — we tell you exactly what each one says, so you can plan with a safe margin.
Checked on 11 October 2026. Airport and airline rules change; always check the times printed on your boarding pass and the airport’s official site, muscatairport.co.om. If your airline’s rule is stricter than the airport’s, the airline’s rule applies.

The terminal: one building, easy to read
Muscat has one passenger terminal, the wave-roofed building that began operating on 20 March 2018. It covers about 580,000 m², was built for 20 million passengers a year in its first phase, and has 29 aircraft stands with jet bridges, including two that can take an A380. It is the home base of Oman Air, the national airline, and SalamAir, Oman’s low-cost carrier. Many foreign airlines fly here too, among them Emirates, flydubai, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Gulf Air, Air Arabia, Turkish Airlines, Egyptair, Air India Express, IndiGo, PIA and Biman. All of them use the same terminal, so you cannot go to the “wrong” building.
- Departures — the check-in hall, then the boarding-pass e-gates, passport control and security. After that you reach the duty-free area and the piers with the gates.
- Level 5 (airside) — the lounges (Oman Air, Primeclass) and the Aerotel transit hotel, above the duty-free shops.
- Level 7 (airside) — the Majan Lounge.
- Arrivals — immigration, baggage reclaim and customs, then the public arrivals hall with telecom shops, money exchange, car-rental desks and the taxi area.
- Ground floor — the Mwasalat bus station, just outside the building.
Check-in times at Muscat by airline
The airport says all check-in counters open 3 hours before the scheduled departure and close 60 minutes before it. The airlines add their own rules on top. Here is what each one publishes today:
| Arrive | Airport check-in | Online check-in | Gate | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Muscat Airport (all flights) | 3 h before | Opens 3 h before, closes 60 min before | — | Gates open 60 min before; boarding starts ~30 min and ends ~15 min before |
| Oman Air | At least 3 h before | Opens 4 h before (one table says 8 h); closes 60 min before | 48 h to 60 min before; drop bags at counters 48/49, from 12 h before | Boarding-pass checkpoint closes 40 min before; gates close 20 min before |
| SalamAir | At least 4 h before (its terms) | Opens 24 h before at Muscat; closes 60 min before | Free 24 h to 8 h before; OMR 4.9 (international) from 8 h to 1 h | Be at the gate 45–60 min before; gates close 20 min before |
| Air India Express | 3 h before | Opens 3 h, closes 60 min before | 14 days to 1 h before | As printed on the boarding pass |
What the “40 minutes” really means. Since 4 August 2024 there is a boarding-pass checkpoint — a row of e-gates after the check-in counters and before passport control. For international flights you cannot pass it later than 40 minutes before departure, because the walk from the furthest counter to the furthest gate takes about that long. It is not the gate closing: Oman Air says the gates themselves still close 20 minutes before departure, and the airport says boarding usually ends about 15 minutes before. If you reach the checkpoint at minute 39, you have still missed your flight.
When to arrive: your departure timeline

- 3 hours before (4 hours on SalamAir): arrive at the terminal. In peak weeks — Eid, National Day, school holidays — come earlier.
- By 60 minutes before: check-in and bag drop close at every counter. Online check-in with Oman Air also ends at 60 minutes.
- By 40 minutes before: be through the boarding-pass e-gates before passport control (international flights). After that, entry is refused.
- About 30 minutes before: boarding usually starts. The gate opens about an hour before departure.
- 15–20 minutes before: boarding ends and the gate closes. The aircraft door closes soon after.
Save time with online check-in. Oman Air opens it 48 hours before departure; SalamAir from 24 hours, free until 8 hours before on its basic fares (late online check-in and counter check-in cost extra on SalamAir Lite). With only hand luggage you can go straight to the boarding-pass gates. The departure hall also has a couple of self-service kiosks that print boarding passes, but there is no automatic self bag drop — checked bags still go to a staffed counter. Security, liquids and e-gates
- Liquids: each container 100 ml or less, all in one see-through plastic bag (the airport provides bags). Oman Air asks for a bag of no more than one litre. Baby food and prescribed medicine are usually allowed beyond the limit — show them separately at screening.
- Electronics: laptops, tablets and cameras may need to come out of the bag for the X-ray.
- Forbidden in the cabin: knives with blades over 6 cm, weapons, stun devices and explosives. Banned items are taken and not returned.
- E-gates: open 24/7 at arrivals and departures for Omani citizens and expatriates with an Omani resident card; they use the card and your fingerprint. Visitors use the staffed passport counters.
- Fines first: if you overstayed a visa, pay the fine online with the Royal Oman Police before you leave home — otherwise you can be held at passport control and miss the flight.
Arriving at Muscat: immigration, visa and customs
- Check your visa before you fly. Citizens of more than 100 countries get 14 days visa-free; everyone else applies for an eVisa on evisa.rop.gov.om before travel — Oman has no general visa on arrival. Our Oman visa guide explains every option.
- Immigration: residents and Omanis use the e-gates; visitors queue at the passport counters with their passport, eVisa (if needed), return ticket and hotel booking.
- Arrival duty free: before baggage reclaim, Muscat Duty Free has a shop for international passengers.
- Baggage reclaim and customs: bags go through X-ray. Choose the green channel if you have nothing to declare, the red channel if you do.
- Arrivals hall: buy a SIM card, change money, pick up your rental car or head to the taxi area and bus station.
The official Oman Customs allowance is gifts up to OMR 300 and 400 cigarettes; non-Muslim adults may bring a limited amount of alcohol (up to 2 litres of wine and 48 cans of beer). You must declare cash, cheques, gold or gems worth OMR 6,000 or more — you can do it online on Gov.om before you travel. If you travel with needles or syringes for a medical condition, declare them and carry proof of medical need.

Under the airport tariff of OMR 1.5 plus 250 baisa per kilometre that is roughly OMR 6, OMR 7.5 and OMR 9.5 before any waiting time; guides report OMR 9–11 for central Muscat in practice. Ride-hailing in Oman runs through licensed local apps such as Oman Taxi: Otaxi and Oman Taxi, not Uber. The Mwasalat bus is the cheapest way into Ruwi, but it only suits light luggage.

- SIM cards: Omantel, Ooredoo and Vodafone have shops in the arrivals hall; bring your passport. Tourist bundles usually cost about OMR 5–10.

- Transit: follow the “Transfers” signs to the transfer desk and transit security; there is no passport control between two international flights.
Flying on to Dhofar? Salalah Airport (SLL) is a smaller, newer terminal about 10 km from the city, with an airport taxi to the centre for about OMR 7. Our Muscat to Salalah guide covers fares and timings.
