How much does Salalah cost? This guide prices every part of the trip in Omani rials — flights from Muscat and the Gulf, hotels by season, car hire, fuel, airport taxis, food and entry fees — and adds up three sample 3-day budgets, so you can see why the same weekend costs almost twice as much in the khareef as in winter.
Salalah is the one place in Arabia where summer means mist, green hills and 25 °C — and every traveller in the Gulf knows it. That is why a weekend that costs a couple about OMR 380 in January can cost OMR 650 or more in August: flights, hotel and hire car all rise at once.
This guide is only about money: flights from Muscat and the Gulf, hotels by season, car hire and fuel, airport taxis, food and entry fees, added up in three sample 3-day budgets. For airlines, schedules and the flight-or-drive question, read our Muscat to Salalah flight guide.
Checked on 13 October 2026. Fares and room rates are live and change every day. Airline prices below come from the airlines’ own route pages; hotel, car and food prices come from booking sites, local firms and recent visitor reports, so treat them as typical ranges, not quotes. Where a figure is not confirmed, we say so.

Khareef or winter: why the same trip can cost twice as much
Salalah has two high seasons that attract very different travellers. The khareef (the monsoon, officially 21 June to 21 September) brings cool mist and green mountains while the rest of the Gulf bakes — more than 1.1 million visitors came between 21 June and 31 August 2026, a record. Winter (October to April) is sunny beach weather in the high 20s °C, popular with European charter guests and with Gulf families on school holidays. Prices follow demand: July and August are the most expensive weeks of the year, while October, November and the spring months are usually the cheapest.
| Item | Winter (Oct–Apr) | Khareef peak (Jul–Aug) |
|---|---|---|
| Return flight Muscat–Salalah, per person | 60–80 | 90–110 if booked early; more last-minute |
| Mid-range hotel room, per night | 35–70 | 90–180 |
| Beach resort room, per night | 80–160 | 180–400+ |
| Small hire car, per day | 8–14 | 15–25 |
| SUV or 4x4, per day | 20–30 | 35–60 |
| Petrol (M91), per litre | 0.229 | 0.229 |
| Taxi airport → city | 7 | 7 |
The cheapest green Salalah: the last days of June and the first three weeks of September are still khareef, but hotels are often noticeably cheaper than in July and August. In winter, avoid the National Day long weekend (25–28 November 2026), Christmas–New Year and Eid if you want the lowest prices.
Flights to Salalah: what to budget
From Muscat, both airlines publish their lowest fares on their route pages. On 13 October 2026 SalamAir showed one-way fares of OMR 29–32 for October and early November, and Oman Air showed one-way fares from OMR 34 in October and from OMR 40 for November to February. Two one-ways make a return of roughly OMR 60–80 in winter. Remember that these are the cheapest fares: SalamAir Lite includes only a 5 kg under-seat bag and Oman Air Super Saver a 7 kg cabin bag, with no checked suitcase on the Salalah route — our SalamAir vs Oman Air baggage guide shows what a bag adds.
| Fare type | Winter | Khareef | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| SalamAir Lite one-way | 29–32 | Rises with demand | salamair.com route page |
| Oman Air Super Saver one-way | from 34–40 | Rises with demand | omanair.com route page |
| Typical return, light bags | 60–80 | about 90–110 | Our estimate from airline and fare-search data |
| Omani fare (citizens only) | from 9.99 one-way | capped at 56.99 return with 20 kg | SalamAir |
There is no official price for non-Omanis in the khareef. Fare-search sites showed Oman Air returns of about OMR 94–96 in August 2026 and about OMR 97–105 for last-minute July dates. Khareef seats went on sale on 15 May in 2026, and booking then is the simplest saving. The special Omani fare is only for Omani nationals with a valid Omani ID — residents and visitors are refused at check-in if they book it.

| Doha | Qatar Airways, 4 a week | often OMR 190+ | Much dearer than UAE routes |
| Riyadh | flynas, Saudia (seasonal) | varies | Mostly khareef; otherwise via Muscat |

Hotels in Salalah: price bands by season
Hotels are the biggest swing in a Salalah budget. A simple city hotel that sells for about OMR 8–20 in October can ask OMR 30–60 in August; one booking site’s data puts a typical resort at about OMR 50 in September and over OMR 150 in August. Some guides report even sharper jumps at the big beach resorts. The bands below are our summary of booking-site data and local guides in October 2026 — not live prices.
| Type | Winter | Khareef (Jul–Aug) | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget hotel or apartment | 15–30 | 40–80 | Short stays, travellers with a car |
| Mid-range 3–4★ hotel | 35–70 | 90–180 | Couples and families in the city |
| Beach resort 5★ | 80–160 | 180–400+ | Holidays by the sea, often with breakfast |
- Central Salalah and Al Haffa: the cheapest area, within reach of the souq, the corniche and Al Baleed. Good if you will use taxis.
- Beach strip and resorts: the big resorts along the coast east of the city and at Hawana Salalah, about 20 km from the airport, charge more but often include breakfast and a private beach.
- Apartments: a good deal for families who want a kitchen; in the khareef many are booked weeks ahead.
- Book early, but flexibly: for July and August, book as soon as your dates are clear and choose a free-cancellation rate if you can — you can still switch if prices fall.
Check that the price is final. Oman charges 5% VAT on hotel stays and reported tourism and municipality taxes on top. Some sites show these only at the last step, which can add around 9–14% to the room price. Compare totals, not headline rates.
Car hire, fuel and taxis
Salalah’s best sights are spread out — Mughsail about 40 km west, Wadi Darbat about 40 minutes east, Mirbat about 70 km east — so most visitors hire a car. A dozen rental firms have counters on the ground floor of Salalah airport, but in the khareef the cheapest cars and the SUVs go first, so book ahead.
| Car | Winter | Khareef | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small (economy) | 8–14 | 15–25 | Suzuki Dzire, Nissan Sunny |
| Medium sedan | 11–17 | 20–30 | Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla |
| Compact SUV | 16–26 | 30–45 | Hyundai Creta |
| Large 4x4 | 25–45 | 45–60+ | Toyota Prado, Nissan Patrol |
- Do you need a 4x4? Not for the main sights: Mughsail, Darbat, Taqah, Mirbat and the city are all on good roads. Only tracks such as the one down to Fazayah beach call for a 4x4.
- Fuel is cheap: M91 petrol costs 229 baisa a litre (M95 239 baisa). Three days of sightseeing — roughly 350–450 km — use about 30–35 litres in a small car, so plan OMR 7–8 for fuel.
- Airport parking costs OMR 2.100 a day if you leave your own car at Salalah airport.
Not driving? Salalah airport publishes fixed taxi fares, paid at the taxi office on level 1. In town, Yango and the local Tasleem app work; Uber does not operate in Oman.
| To | One way | Return |
|---|---|---|
| Salalah city, Al Haffa, Al Dahariz | 7 | 10 |
| Hilton, Crowne Plaza, Anantara area | 10 | 13 |
| Hawana resorts (Rotana, Fanar, Juweira), Taqah | 15 | 22 |
| Al Mughsail | 15 | 22 |
| Mirbat | 25 | 30 |

Food: what eating out costs
Eating in Salalah can be very cheap. Indian and Arab restaurants serve generous plates of biryani or mandi for two or three rials; try shuwa, slow-cooked spiced lamb, and stop at the coconut stalls along Sultan Qaboos Street in Al Haffa. Resort restaurants charge resort prices.
| Item | Price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh coconut at a fruit stall | 0.200 | Price shown at the stall |
| Small bottle of water | 0.100–0.375 | Shop vs restaurant |
| Cappuccino | about 1 | Café |
| Cheap restaurant meal | about 2 | Biryani, mandi, curry |
| Shuwa portion | 5–7 | Local restaurants, festivals |
| Mid-range dinner for two | about 9–15 | Three courses |
| Resort restaurant main course | from about 22 | Five-star hotels |
As a daily food budget per person, plan OMR 5–10 if you eat in local restaurants, OMR 12–25 for a mix of cafés and sit-down dinners, and OMR 30–50 or more if you eat mainly in resorts. In the khareef, the stalls at the festival grounds sell snacks for a few rials.
Attractions: what is free and what you pay
Good news for your budget: most of Salalah’s nature is free. Beaches, the Mughsail blowholes, Ain Razat spring, the Prophet Job tomb and the green khareef viewpoints cost nothing. Heritage sites charge small fees, and official prices are not published online, so the figures below come from recent visitor reports.
| Place | Cost | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Al Baleed Archaeological Park + Museum of the Frankincense Land | about 3 per adult | One ticket for both; bring a card |
| Sumhuram (Khor Rori), UNESCO site | about 2 per car | Combine with Taqah and Mirbat |
| Mirbat Castle | about 6 per tourist | Recent visitor report |
| Wadi Darbat | Free; boat 5–10, kayak about 3 per 30 min | Boats mostly in the khareef |
| Mughsail beach and blowholes | Free | Strongest spray in the khareef |
| Ittin Square (khareef festival) | Free entry; rides 1–2 | Some concerts are ticketed |
| Guided day tour, east or west Salalah | about 37–48 per person | Entry fees usually extra |
| Frankincense at Al Haffa souq | 3–10 per 100 g | Hojari is the best grade; bargain |
Omani sites often charge tourists more than residents — Muscat’s National Museum asks OMR 2 from residents and OMR 5 from tourists — so carry your resident card. With a car, the east-coast loop costs only fuel and a few small tickets.
Sample 3-day budgets

Here is how the numbers add up for three days and two nights. These are examples built from the price ranges above, not quotes — your real total depends on dates, how early you book and the hotel you choose. Shopping and souvenirs are not included.
A couple from Muscat: winter vs khareef
| Item | Winter | Khareef |
|---|---|---|
| Return flights × 2, light bags | 140 | 200 |
| Hotel, 2 nights | 100 | 260 |
| Small car, 3 days | 33 | 60 |
| Fuel | 8 | 8 |
| Food, 3 days | 75 | 90 |
| Sights and extras | 20 | 30 |
| Total | ≈ 376 (188 each) | ≈ 648 (324 each) |
A budget solo traveller in winter, no car
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Return flight, cabin bag only | 60 |
| Budget hotel, 2 nights | 40 |
| Airport taxi both ways | 14 |
| One guided day tour | 37 |
| Ride-hailing in town | 6 |
| Food, 3 days | 18 |
| Al Baleed and extras | 5 |
| Total | ≈ 180 |
A family of four in the khareef
| Item | Khareef | Same trip in winter |
|---|---|---|
| Return flights × 4 with 20 kg bags | 440 | 300 |
| Beach resort family room, 2 nights | 500 | 240 |
| SUV, 3 days | 135 | 75 |
| Fuel | 9 | 9 |
| Food, 3 days | 180 | 180 |
| Darbat boat, Al Baleed, festival rides | 40 | 30 |
| Total | ≈ 1,304 | ≈ 834 |
The lesson is clear: in the khareef, the hotel and the flights make up most of the extra cost, while food and sights barely change. Booking those two early — or choosing the shoulder weeks — saves more than any other trick.
