The Shiraz to Muscat flight is one of the shortest international hops in southern Iran: about 870 kilometres across the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, and under two hours from the gardens of Shiraz to the turquoise waterfront of Muscat. Route status — 29 September 2026: scheduled Shiraz–Muscat flights are not operating. Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation suspended Iranian airlines’ flights to Muscat from 23 September, and SalamAir has paused its Iran flights until further notice. No restart date has been announced, and according to Al Jazeera talks with Oman are ongoing. Are there direct flights from Shiraz to Muscat right now?
Not at the moment. After new restrictions on Iranian aviation in September 2026, Muscat airport stopped accepting Iranian airlines’ flights from 23 September, and SalamAir, Oman’s low-cost carrier, had already paused its Iran routes. One-stop options are very limited too. This is a suspension rather than a permanent closure: both airports are open, and the route has restarted after every earlier pause.
What that means for you in practice:
- If you hold a ticket for a cancelled flight, the airline’s involuntary-change rules normally entitle you to a free date change or a full refund. Contact whoever issued the ticket; if we issued it, message our support desk with your booking reference.
- If you are planning a trip, avoid non-refundable tickets on sites that still show an old timetable. Our live Shiraz–Muscat route page only lists dates the airline has actually filed.
- If you are travelling within Iran, domestic flights are running normally — Tehran to Shiraz and Shiraz to Abadan, for example, are on sale today.
How the Shiraz–Muscat route normally works
In a normal season, Iranian carriers such as Qeshm Air and Taban Air and Oman’s low-cost airline SalamAir fly the route non-stop, several times a week, with extra flights around Nowruz and the summer holidays. Flights leave from Shiraz Shahid Dastgheib International Airport (SYZ) and land at Muscat International Airport (MCT). Each is its city’s only international airport, so there is no risk of heading to the wrong one.
The flight itself is short — roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours gate to gate. Muscat is 30 minutes ahead of Iran, so a flight leaving Shiraz at 08:00 lands at around 10:30 Muscat time.
Booking Shiraz to Muscat tickets the smart way
When seats come back, the first flights usually fill with pent-up demand. Booking well is less about finding a secret cheap day and more about understanding how airfares are built and what to check before you pay.
- Search live, not cached. Many travel sites show prices stored hours ago. Our search asks the airline’s reservation system directly, so the seat and fare you see are what is open at that moment.
- Compare fare classes, not just prices. One flight is sold in several fare classes. Cheaper classes usually carry higher change and refund penalties and sometimes a smaller baggage allowance — the gap between two fares is often the price of flexibility.
- Check the baggage allowance before paying. It depends on the airline and the fare class. If you are carrying gifts, handicrafts or trade goods, pick a fare with enough allowance; excess baggage at the airport usually costs more.
- Enter names exactly as in the passport. Latin spelling must match the passport letter for letter; name corrections after ticketing are limited and cause trouble at Muscat passport control.
- Book the return at the same time. A confirmed return ticket is one of the conditions for visa-free entry to Oman. Book your Muscat to Shiraz return in the same system.
- Keep your booking reference (PNR) and ticket number. With them you can manage your booking, check your ticket status or check in online wherever the airline allows it.
Travelling as a family? Keep everyone in one booking where you can. If the airline moves the flight, one booking moves together; five separate bookings can end up on different flights.
Best time to fly from Shiraz to Muscat
Muscat has a hot, humid coastal climate that feels very different from dry, temperate Shiraz. From November to March the weather is pleasant and ideal for the city and the beaches; from June to September daytime temperatures regularly pass 40 °C with high humidity.

Nowruz is the biggest travel peak between Fars and Oman, and seats in the week either side of 21 March sell out first. If your trip falls in Ramadan, shop and restaurant hours change in Oman and eating or drinking in public during daylight is not allowed.
Entering Oman: visa and documents
The good news for Iranian travellers is that Iran is on the list of countries whose citizens the Royal Oman Police admits without a visa for short stays: up to 14 days visa-free, provided you arrive with a confirmed hotel reservation, health insurance, a return ticket and enough funds for your stay. This 14-day entry is single-entry, cannot be turned into residence and does not allow work.
Staying longer than 14 days? Apply for a tourist visa before you travel through the Royal Oman Police eVisa portal; processing usually takes a few working days and the portal shows the current fee. Oman also updated its visa regulations in August 2026, so re-check the conditions on the portal before you buy your ticket. Other passports follow their own rules on the same portal.

Passport validity and travel insurance
Your passport should be valid for at least six months from the date you enter Oman and have a few blank pages. Buy travel insurance from a reputable insurer that covers medical care in Oman and carry a printed copy, because the immigration officer may ask to see it.

Iranian passport holders need to finish a few formalities before heading to the airport; without them you will be stopped at passport control in Shiraz.
- Exit fee: for 1405 (2026–27) it is 900,000 tomans for your first trip of the year, 1.5 million for the second and 2.2 million for the third and later trips, paid separately for every traveller including children. Pay online and keep the receipt. Iranians who live abroad are exempt when returning to their country of residence.
- Exit permit for conscripts: men liable for military service cannot leave Iran without an exit permit. Check your status on the Sakha portal or at a Police +10 office before you book.
- Cash limits: the limit for carrying foreign cash out of Iran by air is the equivalent of €5,000 per traveller; larger sums need proof of purchase and a customs declaration (Central Bank of Iran rules). On arrival in Oman, amounts of OMR 6,000 or more must be declared to Oman Customs.
- Bank cards: Iranian bank cards do not work in Oman. Bring dollars, euros or Omani rials in cash for the whole trip.
- Medicines: carry medicines with the prescription and in the original packaging; some sedatives and strong painkillers are only accepted in Oman with a doctor’s prescription.
At Shiraz International Airport
Shahid Dastgheib Airport lies in the south-east of Shiraz, about 8 km from the city centre — 20 to 30 minutes by car depending on traffic. International flights use the international terminal, which is separate from the domestic one, so tell your driver you are flying abroad. The metro does not reach the airport; an airport taxi or ride-hailing app is the easiest option.
- Be at the international terminal three hours before departure; check-in queues for international flights get long before holidays.
- Keep your exit-fee receipt, passport and, if needed, your exit permit to hand.
- Check-in usually closes one hour before departure; after that you will not be accepted, even with a ticket.
- The airline checks your Oman entry documents before issuing a boarding pass — have your hotel booking, insurance and return ticket ready.
Arriving in Muscat: immigration, customs and getting into the city
Muscat International Airport’s new terminal, opened in 2018, is large, calm and well signposted. After landing, set your watch 30 minutes forward, join the passport-control queue and keep your visa-free entry documents ready. After collecting your bags you pass through customs into the arrivals hall.
The airport is in the Seeb area, about 30 km from Muttrah and old Muscat. The official Muscat Airport guide lists every option; here is the short version:

If a taxi driver does not switch on the meter, agree the fare before setting off. Exchange counters and Omani mobile operators are in the same arrivals hall; buy a SIM before you leave the airport.
Money, SIM cards and costs in Oman
Oman’s currency is the Omani rial (OMR), divided into 1,000 baisa and pegged to the US dollar at roughly 2.6 dollars per rial. Because it is one of the world’s strongest currencies, prices look small — two or three rials for a simple meal is normal.
- Cash: Iranian cards do not work, so bring dollars or euros and change them at the airport or in town. Exchange houses in Muttrah and Ruwi usually beat airport rates.
- SIM card: tourist SIMs are sold with your passport in the arrivals hall; activate a data bundle there so maps and ride-hailing work from the first minute.
- Power: Oman uses British three-pin sockets (type G, 240 V); bring an adapter for Iranian two-pin plugs.
- Dress and etiquette: Oman is conservative but very hospitable. Clothing that covers shoulders and knees suits everyone, and women must cover their hair to enter a mosque. The weekend is Friday and Saturday.
Your first days in Muscat: where to go
Muscat is a calm city strung between the Hajar mountains and the Sea of Oman, and it rewards travellers who explore. The official Experience Oman site is a good planning resource; these are the places not to miss on a first visit:
- Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque — a masterpiece of modern Islamic architecture with one of the world’s largest hand-woven carpets; visit early in the morning and dress modestly.
- Muttrah Corniche and Souq — an evening walk along the waterfront and a wander through the old market of perfume, frankincense and silver.
- Old Muscat — Al Alam Palace and the Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts beside the historic harbour.
- Royal Opera House and Qurum Beach — the opera house’s architecture and gardens, then white sand and one of the city’s best sunsets.
- Bimmah Sinkhole and Wadi Shab — a day trip south-east of Muscat to swim in turquoise water between the rocks.
