Tehran to Muscat Flight Guide 2026: From Imam Khomeini Airport to Arrival in Oman

Tehran to Muscat is the busiest air link between Iran and Oman: a capital-to-capital hop of about 1,480 kilometres that crosses the Zagros, the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz in about two and a half hours. Iranian families who live in Oman, business travellers, students and holidaymakers chasing Muscat’s mild winter all rely on it, and in a normal season it is one of the most-flown international routes out of Imam Khomeini Airport.

This guide walks through the whole trip: where the route stands right now and what still works, how to reach Imam Khomeini Airport and get through it smoothly, how Iranian passport holders enter Oman, what to sort out before leaving Iran, and what to expect from landing to your first days in Muscat.

Are there direct flights from Tehran to Muscat right now?

Not at the moment. Mahan Air stopped flying to Muscat on 17 September, and from 23 September Muscat airport stopped accepting all Iranian airlines. Oman’s own carriers are not flying to Iran either: SalamAir has kept its Iran routes suspended, and Oman Air does not serve Iran. This is a suspension, not a closed border — both airports are open, and when Iranian international flights restarted in April 2026 after the war-time closure, Muscat was one of the first two routes to come back.

What that means for you in practice:

• If you hold a ticket for a cancelled flight, the airline’s involuntary-change rules normally entitle you to a free date change or a full refund. Contact whoever issued the ticket; if we issued it, message our support desk with your booking reference.
• If you are planning a trip, do not buy non-refundable tickets on sites still showing an old timetable. Our live Tehran–Muscat route page only lists dates the airline has actually filed.

Other ways to reach Muscat from Tehran while direct flights are paused

If your trip cannot wait, the honest picture as of 30 September is short. The Gulf hubs that usually carry one-stop traffic are closed to Iran: the UAE suspended Iranian airlines from 24 September, Emirates and flydubai are not flying to Iran, and Qatar Airways’ Iran flights are suspended. The one connection that works today goes through Istanbul.

The Istanbul route works but is not simple. The two flights are almost always separate tickets, so you collect and re-check your bags in Istanbul and pass Turkish passport control — Iranian passports are visa-free in Turkey for up to 90 days. Leave at least four to five hours between flights, check which Istanbul airport each one uses (Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen are 90 minutes apart), and remember that if the first flight is late, the second airline owes you nothing. Expect a long day and a far higher total fare than the direct flight. Most importantly, confirm with the airline and the Omani embassy that you will be admitted: on 22 September Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation said Iranian passengers were not currently being accepted at Muscat airport, and it is not yet clear whether that also covers Iranians arriving on foreign airlines.

How the Tehran–Muscat route normally works

In a normal season the route is flown non-stop several times a week by Iranian carriers — Mahan Air, Sepehran, Varesh, Taban and Qeshm Air have all served it — and, until the war in February 2026, by Oman’s low-cost airline SalamAir, with extra flights around Nowruz and the summer holidays. The scheduled flight time is about 2 hours 30 minutes from Tehran, a little longer on the way back.

All Tehran–Muscat flights use Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA), not Mehrabad (THR), which handles domestic flights. Muscat is 30 minutes ahead of Tehran, so a flight leaving IKA at 09:00 lands in Muscat at around 12:00 local time.

Booking Tehran to Muscat tickets the smart way

When seats return, the first flights usually fill quickly with travellers who have been waiting. Booking well is less about hunting for a secret cheap day and more about knowing how the fare is built and checking a few things before you pay.

1. 1Search live, not cached. Many travel sites show prices stored hours ago. Our search asks the airline’s reservation system directly, so the seat and fare you see are what is open at that moment.
2. 2Compare fare classes, not just prices. The same flight is sold in several fare classes. Cheaper ones usually carry higher change and refund penalties and sometimes less baggage — on a route that has just been suspended, that flexibility is worth paying for.
3. 3Check the baggage allowance before paying. It depends on the airline and the fare class. Gifts, dried fruit and saffron for family in Oman add up quickly; excess baggage at the airport costs more than a higher fare.
4. 4Enter names exactly as in the passport. The Latin spelling must match letter for letter; name corrections after ticketing are limited and cause trouble at Muscat passport control.
5. 5Book the return at the same time. A confirmed return ticket is one of the conditions for visa-free entry to Oman, and the Muscat to Tehran return is in the same system.
6. 6Keep your booking reference (PNR) and ticket number. With them you can manage your booking, check your ticket status or check in online wherever the airline allows it.

Getting to Imam Khomeini Airport

Imam Khomeini International Airport lies about 35 km south-west of Tehran’s city limits — roughly 40–50 km by road from central Tehran along the Persian Gulf (Tehran–Qom) freeway. Without traffic the drive takes 45–60 minutes; at rush hour or before holidays it can take much longer. IKA has two passenger terminals: Terminal 1, the main international terminal, and Salam Terminal, which handles pilgrimage flights and some scheduled international services. Which one your flight uses depends on the airline and can change, so check the terminal printed on your ticket or call the airport information line on 096330 before you set off.

Flying in from another Iranian city? Allow for the Mehrabad transfer

Domestic flights into Tehran land at Mehrabad (THR), while Muscat flights leave from IKA — two separate airports with no airside link, about 45–50 km apart by road. Budget 45–60 minutes for the drive by airport taxi or Snapp/Tapsi, and up to 90 minutes in heavy traffic; there is also a bus from Mehrabad Terminal 4 to IKA, roughly every hour. Because IKA asks international passengers to arrive three hours early, we recommend leaving at least five hours between your domestic arrival at Mehrabad and the Muscat departure, and flying in the day before if the two flights are on separate tickets. Domestic flights into Tehran are on sale today — for example Shiraz to Tehran, Tabriz to Tehran, Bandar Abbas to Tehran, Abadan to Tehran and Kish to Tehran.

At the airport: check-in, exit formalities and boarding

1. 1Be at the terminal at least three hours before departure — that is the airport’s own advice, and queues get long before holidays and on busy mornings.
2. 2Have your passport, exit-fee receipt and, if you need one, your military-service exit permit in hand before you join the check-in queue.
3. 3At check-in the airline checks your Oman entry documents — hotel booking, insurance and return ticket — before it issues a boarding pass, so keep printed copies.
4. 4Check-in usually closes 45 to 60 minutes before departure, depending on the airline; after that you will not be accepted, even with a valid ticket.
5. 5Then go through Iranian passport control and security. Cafés and duty-free are airside, but boarding usually starts 30–45 minutes before departure — keep an eye on the gate.

Entering Oman: visa and documents

Iranian passport holders can visit Oman visa-free for up to 14 days, as long as they arrive with a confirmed hotel booking, travel insurance, a return ticket and enough money for the stay — the Royal Oman Police↗ can refuse entry if any of these is missing. The visa-free stay is single-entry and does not allow work. For longer trips, apply for a tourist visa on the ROP eVisa portal↗ at least a week before you fly. Oman revised its visa rules in August 2026, so check the portal again before you pay for a ticket, and make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from arrival.

Before you leave Iran: exit fee, cash limits and exit permits

• Exit fee: for 1405 it is 900,000 tomans for your first trip abroad in the year, 1.5 million for the second and 2.2 million for the third and later ones — per traveller, children included. Pay it online before you leave for the airport and keep the receipt; Iranians who live abroad are exempt when returning to their country of residence.
• Military-service exit permit: men liable for conscription need an exit permit to leave Iran. Check your status on the Sakha portal or at a Police +10 office before you book, not in the week you fly.
• Foreign cash: you can take out the equivalent of €5,000 per traveller by air; larger sums need proof of purchase and a customs declaration (Central Bank of Iran↗). Iranian bank cards do not work in Oman, so this cash is your whole travel budget — plan it carefully.
• Medicines: carry them in the original packaging with the prescription; some sedatives and strong painkillers are only allowed into Oman with a doctor’s prescription.

On board: two and a half hours from the Alborz to the Hajar mountains

After take-off the flight heads south over the Zagros, crosses the Persian Gulf near Bandar Abbas and the Strait of Hormuz, and descends over the Gulf of Oman. On a clear day the jagged Hajar mountains and Muscat’s coastline make the last twenty minutes spectacular, so a window seat is worth asking for. On a flight this length expect a light meal or snack and soft drinks. Before landing, set your watch 30 minutes forward and keep your passport and entry documents in your hand luggage, not in the checked bag.

Arriving in Muscat: immigration, customs and getting into the city

Muscat’s terminal, opened in 2018, is large, calm and well signposted: passport control, baggage, then customs — cash of OMR 6,000 or more must be declared to Oman Customs↗. Best time to fly from Tehran to Muscat

The two capitals have opposite seasons. When Tehran turns cold and grey from December to February, Muscat is at its best — sunny, dry and in the mid-twenties; in summer Tehran is hot but dry, while Muscat passes 40 °C with heavy humidity.

Money, SIM cards and a realistic daily budget in Muscat

The Omani rial (OMR) is divided into 1,000 baisa and pegged at about 2.6 US dollars. Iranian bank cards do not work in Oman, so plan the trip in cash and change dollars or euros at exchange houses in Ruwi or Muttrah, which usually beat airport rates. Sockets are British type G (240 V) — bring an adapter.

Until the route reopens: flights from Tehran on sale today

If what you really want is sea, sun and a short break, you do not need a passport for it: Kish and Qeshm islands are a domestic flight from Mehrabad and are on sale today, straight from the airline’s schedule and in the same booking flow. The same goes for Bandar Abbas, Shiraz, Tabriz and the rest of the domestic network — and Qeshm Air still flies between Yerevan and Tehran.

Changes, cancellations and refunds on Tehran–Muscat tickets
