Planning Umrah from Muscat or Salalah? This 2026 guide covers every non-stop flight from Oman to Jeddah, Madinah and Taif, fares from the airlines’ own calendars, visa rules for Omani citizens and for expatriates living in Oman, the Nusuk permit, the meningitis vaccine, when and where to put on ihram on the plane, Zamzam and baggage rules, the Haramain train and the best months to go.
For many families in Oman, Umrah is the one trip that is planned all year: parents who have waited a long time, a couple after their wedding, a group of friends from the same mosque, or a quick journey over a long weekend. From Muscat the flight to Jeddah or Madinah takes only a little over three hours, so the hard part is not the distance — it is getting the visa, the permit, the timing and the ticket right.
This guide puts everything in one place for Omani citizens and for expatriates living in Oman — Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Egyptians and others: which airlines fly non-stop from Oman to Jeddah, Madinah and Taif, what the fares look like, which visa you need, how the Nusuk permit works, when to put on ihram on the plane, the vaccine rule, Zamzam and baggage, the Haramain train, and the best and cheapest months to travel. Fares come from the airlines’ own calendars and rules from official Saudi sources wherever possible.
Checked on 11 October 2026. Umrah rules, airline schedules and terminals change often — Jeddah airport is moving airlines between terminals right now. Fares quoted here are one-way economy “from” prices shown by the airlines on that date; they change daily and rise sharply in peak weeks. Always confirm in the Nusuk app and with your airline before you travel.

Do you need a visa for Umrah from Oman?
It depends on your passport, not on where you fly from. Omani citizens, like all GCC nationals, need no visa for Saudi Arabia. Expatriates who live in Oman with a valid residence card can apply online for the Saudi tourist eVisa, which allows Umrah outside the Hajj season. Visitors without GCC residence need a tourist eVisa (if their passport is eligible) or an Umrah visa through a licensed provider.
| You are… | What you need | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| An Omani (or other GCC) citizen | No visa — passport for flights | You still need a Nusuk Umrah permit |
| An expatriate resident of Oman | Saudi tourist eVisa for GCC residents | One year, multiple entry, up to 90 days per stay; residence card should be valid at least 3 months after entry |
| A visitor in Oman without residence | Tourist eVisa if your passport qualifies, or an Umrah visa | Umrah visa holders must now enter within 30 days of issue |
| Anyone in the Hajj closure window | Usually not possible | Umrah permits were paused from 18 April to 31 May 2026 |
The eVisa for GCC residents is applied for on the official Visit Saudi visa portal or KSA Visa. Since 2026 it is open to GCC residents of every profession, not only to selected job titles. Expect a total of around SAR 300–340 including the compulsory medical insurance — the exact amount is shown at checkout. Your passport needs at least six months of validity. Stay away from look-alike “Saudi visa” websites that add their own service fees.
A visa is not a permit. Whatever your passport, you must book an Umrah permit in the Nusuk app before you perform Umrah at Masjid al-Haram. Only one permit can be active at a time, and staff can refuse entry without one — even with a valid visa. Book the permit as soon as your flight is confirmed.

Non-stop flights from Oman to Jeddah, Madinah and Taif
Two airlines carry almost all Umrah traffic from Oman: the national carrier Oman Air and the low-cost SalamAir. Both fly from Muscat International Airport (MCT). We found no current non-stop service from Muscat to Jeddah or Madinah by Saudia, flynas or flyadeal; flydubai, Gulf Air, Qatar Airways and Etihad sell one-stop connections through their hubs, which only make sense when the non-stop flights are full.
| Route | Airlines | Flight time | How often |
|---|---|---|---|
| Muscat MCT → Jeddah JED | Oman Air, SalamAir | ≈ 3 h 15 – 3 h 35 | Several flights a day — about 36 a week combined |
| Muscat MCT → Madinah MED | Oman Air, SalamAir | ≈ 3 h 05 – 3 h 20 | Daily — about 12–14 a week combined |
| Muscat MCT → Taif TIF | Oman Air | ≈ 3 h 20 | Three a week since January 2026 — confirm the winter schedule |
| Salalah SLL → Jeddah JED | SalamAir (new) | — | Starting late October 2026 with the winter schedule |
| Sohar, Duqm | No direct flights | — | Connect through Muscat |
Remember that Saudi Arabia is one hour behind Oman, so a SalamAir flight that leaves Muscat at 09:55 lands in Madinah at 12:00 local time. Salalah travellers get a big change this winter: SalamAir is opening a base at Salalah with direct Jeddah flights from the end of October 2026, so families in Dhofar no longer have to start their Umrah with a domestic hop — see our Muscat to Salalah guide if you still need to connect. Taif is roughly an hour and a half by road from Makkah and is a quieter alternative when Jeddah fares jump.
How much does a flight cost?
| Route and airline | Lowest fare seen | Range on the calendar |
|---|---|---|
| Muscat → Jeddah, SalamAir | OMR 64 | OMR 64 – 129 (Oct–Nov 2026) |
| Muscat → Jeddah, Oman Air | OMR 85 | OMR 85 – 244 (October 2026); one May 2027 date at OMR 494 |
| Muscat → Madinah, SalamAir | OMR 49 | About OMR 57 – 86 (late summer 2026) |
| Muscat → Madinah, Oman Air | OMR 81 | Some dates OMR 115 and above; peaks over OMR 300 |
These are “from” fares: the cheapest SalamAir and Oman Air fare families may include no checked bag, which matters on an Umrah trip when you want to bring Zamzam and gifts home. A return ticket in a quiet month usually costs roughly twice the one-way fare; in the last ten days of Ramadan and around Eid, the same seat can cost several times more. Book early for those weeks, and keep some flexibility in your dates for the rest of the year.

Jeddah first or Madinah first?
Both work, and many travellers book an open-jaw ticket: fly into one city and home from the other, with the Haramain high-speed train in between. The choice mainly changes when you put on ihram.
| Fly to Jeddah first | Fly to Madinah first | |
|---|---|---|
| Ihram | On the plane, before the miqat | Not on this flight — later at Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali) on the way to Makkah |
| Umrah | Same day as arrival | After your days in Madinah |
| Best for | Short trips, Umrah right away | Elderly parents, families with children, a calmer start |
| Onward | Haramain train or road to Makkah | Train or road to Makkah, then fly home from Jeddah |
Ihram and miqat when you fly from Oman
Jeddah airport is not a miqat, and you may not pass the miqat — or the point in the air level with it — without ihram. Most guides name Qarn al-Manazil (As-Sayl al-Kabir), about 80 km from Makkah, as the miqat for travellers from Oman and the Gulf; depending on the flight path, the plane may come level with another miqat such as Yalamlam. Because the crossing can come 15 to 45 minutes before landing, the simplest rule is: be in ihram clothing before the cabin announcement, or before take-off.
- At home in Muscat: shower, trim nails, and men put on the two white ihram cloths; women wear modest everyday clothes. Keep your cloths in the cabin bag if you prefer to change at the airport.
- At the gate or on board: pray two rak‘ahs if you wish, but do not make the intention yet if you would rather wait for the announcement.
- Before the miqat: make the niyyah for Umrah and start the talbiyah. Crews usually announce the miqat about 30 minutes before — do not rely on the announcement alone.
- From then on: the ihram restrictions apply — no perfume, no cutting hair or nails, and for men no stitched clothing or covered head.
- If you fly to Madinah first, none of this applies on the flight; you enter ihram at Dhul Hulayfah when you leave Madinah for Makkah.

Best and cheapest times for Umrah from Oman
The current Umrah season (1448 AH) opened on 31 May 2026. According to the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah calendar, the last Umrah visas are issued around 9 March 2027, the last entry is around 23 March 2027 and Umrah-visa pilgrims must leave by around 7 April 2027 — all Hijri dates, so they can move by a day. Last spring, Umrah permits for everyone, including GCC citizens and residents, were paused from 18 April to 31 May 2026 for Hajj; expect a similar closure in spring 2027 and check the official dates before booking anything late in the season.
| Period | Crowds and fares | Our view |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-October – mid-December 2026 | Moderate; pleasant weather | Good value, especially mid-week |
| Late December – early January | School holidays; fares rise | Book early for families |
| Mid-January – early February 2027 | Calmer before Ramadan | One of the best windows |
| Ramadan (expected from about 8 February 2027) | Very busy; last ten days are the peak | Book months ahead or avoid |
| Eid al-Fitr and after | Busy, then the season winds down | Watch the Ministry’s deadlines |
| Hajj closure (spring 2027) | No Umrah permits | Not possible — plan around it |
- Cheapest days: the airline calendars often differ by tens of rials between neighbouring days — moving your departure by a day or two often saves more than any promotion.
- Weather: Makkah is very hot until October; November to February is the most comfortable time for older parents.
- Long weekends: Omani public holidays fill the Jeddah flights fast — book as soon as the holiday is announced.
Arriving in Jeddah and Madinah
- Jeddah terminals: since 27 September 2026 SalamAir uses the new Terminal 4 (the rebuilt old South Terminal); Oman Air uses Terminal 1. More airlines are moving in stages — tell anyone picking you up to check the terminal on the day.
- Haramain train from Jeddah airport: the station is in the Terminal 1 complex. Trains reach Makkah in under an hour and Madinah in about 1 h 45; book on the official Saudi Arabia Railways site. Makkah station is a few kilometres from the Haram, so you still need a taxi or bus.
- Madinah airport (MED): Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International is on the edge of the city; a taxi or ride-hailing car to your hotel near the Prophet’s Mosque is the easiest option.
- Rawdah visit: the Rawdah in the Prophet’s Mosque is also booked in Nusuk. Scheduled slots are limited per person per year, but instant booking near the mosque and a waitlist are often available — check your eligibility in the app.
Zamzam, baggage and the vaccine
- Zamzam: each pilgrim may take home one factory-sealed 5-litre Zamzam container, checked in as a separate item — not inside a suitcase and not in the cabin. Buy the official sealed cans in Makkah or at the airport.
- Oman Air allows up to 5 litres of Zamzam from Jeddah, Madinah or Taif in addition to your allowance (Oman Air baggage FAQ). For SalamAir, ask us before booking — its cheapest fares come without checked baggage.
- Meningitis vaccine: the Saudi Ministry of Health requires every Umrah pilgrim to have a quadrivalent ACYW meningococcal vaccine (also written ACYW135): a conjugate vaccine within the last 5 years, or a polysaccharide one within the last 3 years, given at least 10 days before arrival. Clinics in Oman can give it and issue a certificate — keep it with your passport.

Umrah from Oman: frequently asked questions
Do Omani citizens need a visa for Umrah?
No. Omani citizens, like other GCC nationals, enter Saudi Arabia without a visa. You still need a Nusuk Umrah permit and, from the Ministry of Health rules, the meningitis ACYW vaccine.
Can an Indian or Pakistani living in Oman do Umrah on the Saudi eVisa?
Yes. Expatriates with a valid GCC residence can apply for the Saudi tourist eVisa online, and it allows Umrah outside the Hajj season. Since 2026 it is open to residents of every profession. Book your Nusuk permit after the visa is approved.
How long is the flight from Muscat to Jeddah?
About 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 35 minutes non-stop with Oman Air or SalamAir. Muscat to Madinah is slightly shorter, about 3 hours 5 to 20 minutes.
How much is a Muscat to Jeddah ticket?
On 11 October 2026 the airlines showed one-way fares from OMR 64 (SalamAir) and OMR 85 (Oman Air) for the coming weeks. Prices change daily and rise sharply in Ramadan and on holidays; the cheapest fares may have no checked bag.
Where do I put on ihram when flying from Oman?
If you fly to Jeddah, you must be in ihram before the plane reaches the miqat — usually named as Qarn al-Manazil for flights from the Gulf. Put on the clothes before take-off and make the intention before the announcement. If you fly to Madinah first, you enter ihram later at Dhul Hulayfah.
Can I bring Zamzam water back to Muscat?
Yes — one sealed 5-litre container per pilgrim, checked in separately. Oman Air carries it in addition to your allowance; for SalamAir check your fare’s baggage before booking.

The Ministry’s 1448 calendar puts the last Umrah visa around 9 March 2027 and the last departure for Umrah-visa holders around 7 April 2027, with a pause in Umrah permits around Hajj. Check the official dates before booking spring travel.
