Everything you need before flying from Muscat to Shiraz: where the route stands today and what still works, who needs a visa for Iran, how to get from Shiraz airport into the city, money and SIM cards, a first-timer’s three days in Shiraz and how to book the moment seats return.
Muscat to Shiraz is one of the best-loved air links between Oman and Iran: a hop of about 870 kilometres across the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz that takes well under two hours. Shiraz is the Iranian city Omanis know best — the city of the poets Hafez and Saadi, of Persian gardens and of Persepolis — and the route also carries patients heading to its hospitals and Iranian families who live and work in Oman.
This guide covers where the route stands right now and what still works, who needs a visa, the departure from Muscat, getting into Shiraz, money and SIM cards, and a three-day plan for a first visit.
Route status — 1 October 2026: there are no direct Muscat–Shiraz flights at the moment. SalamAir lists its flights to and from Iran as suspended until further notice, Oman Air does not serve Iran, and after new US sanctions on Iranian aviation Muscat airport stopped handling Iranian airlines’ flights from 23 September. Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation says talks with Oman are continuing, but no restart date has been announced. Our Muscat to Shiraz flights page reads the airline’s schedule live and shows new dates the moment they are filed.

Are there direct flights from Muscat to Shiraz right now?
Not at the moment. SalamAir, which flew Muscat–Shiraz for years, has kept its Iran flights suspended since the war earlier in 2026, and from 23 September Muscat airport stopped accepting flights by Iranian airlines. This is a suspension, not a closed border: both airports are open, and when Shiraz airport reopened on 25 April 2026 after the war-time closure, Shiraz–Muscat was one of the first two international routes to be approved again.

What that means for you in practice:
- If you hold a ticket for a cancelled flight, the airline’s involuntary-change rules normally entitle you to a free date change or a full refund. Contact whoever issued the ticket; if we issued it, message our support desk with your booking reference.
- If you are planning a trip, do not pay for non-refundable tickets on sites that still show an old timetable — several still list Shiraz–Muscat flights that will not operate. Our live Muscat to Shiraz route page only shows dates the airline has actually filed.
- If you are travelling the other way, from Shiraz back to Oman, our Shiraz to Muscat flight guide covers that direction, and the Shiraz to Muscat route page shows return dates as soon as they are filed.
Other ways to reach Shiraz while direct flights are paused
If your trip cannot wait, the honest picture on 1 October is that there is no simple option. The Gulf hubs that usually carry one-stop traffic are closed to Iran, foreign airlines have suspended their Iran flights, and the routes that remain all mean two separate tickets on Iranian airlines that are under sanctions.
| Option | Status | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Via Istanbul | Possible, but fragile | Muscat–Istanbul on Turkish Airlines or Oman Air (about 5½ hours), then an Iranian airline to Shiraz or Tehran |
| Via Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah | Closed | The UAE suspended Iranian airlines on 24 September; UAE carriers are not flying to Iran |
| Via Doha | Closed | Qatar Airways normally flies to Shiraz, but its Iran flights are suspended |
| Via Najaf | Not practical | A short-term exemption covers pilgrim flights only, with no Shiraz flights announced |
| Via Yerevan | Long but possible | No non-stop flight from Muscat; Yerevan–Tehran, then a domestic flight to Shiraz |
| By sea | Not available | No scheduled passenger ferry can be booked today |
Istanbul is the most realistic routing, but the two flights are almost always separate tickets: you re-check your bags, and if the first flight is late the second airline owes you nothing, so leave four to five hours between them. Iranian airlines’ access to Turkey is also fragile — Al Jazeera reports several carriers already cut off. If you end up in Tehran, Tehran to Shiraz is on sale today.
How the Muscat–Shiraz route normally works
Muscat–Shiraz was SalamAir’s first route to Iran, launched in 2018 and flown as OV555 (Muscat to Shiraz) and OV556 (Shiraz to Muscat) four or five times a week on Airbus A320-family jets. Iranian airlines — Qeshm Air, Taban Air, Pars Air and, from late 2025, Varesh — added their own flights, and by November 2025 Shiraz airport counted about 22 flights a week between the two cities.
The flight is scheduled at about 1 hour 45 minutes from Muscat and 1 hour 35 minutes back. Shiraz is 30 minutes behind, so a 15:30 departure from Muscat lands at about 16:45 Shiraz time.

Booking Muscat to Shiraz tickets the smart way
When seats return, the first flights fill quickly with travellers who have been waiting. Check a few things before you pay:
- Search live, not cached. Our search asks the airline’s reservation system directly, so the fare you see is what is open right now.
- Compare fare classes, not just prices. Cheaper classes carry higher change and refund penalties — on a route that has just been suspended, flexibility is worth paying for.
- Check the baggage allowance. It depends on the airline and fare class and is shown with the fare rules before issue.
- Enter names exactly as in the passport, letter for letter.
- Book the return at the same time — the Shiraz to Muscat return is in the same system.
- Keep your booking reference (PNR). With it you can manage your booking, check your ticket status or check in online. If the airline cancels, its rules normally give you a free change or a full refund — see our refund and change policy.

Entering Iran: visas and documents
Iran’s entry rules depend on your passport, not on where you live — which matters on this route, because many travellers flying from Muscat are expatriates. Omani citizens do not need a visa: Oman is on the visa-waiver list of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs e-visa portal. Sources disagree on how long the waiver lets you stay, so confirm the permitted stay with the Iranian Embassy in Muscat before a long visit. Most other nationalities apply online in advance.
| Passport | Rule | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Oman | Visa waiver | No visa needed; confirm the permitted length of stay with the Iranian Embassy in Muscat |
| UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain | Visa-free for tourism, 15 days, once every six months | Apply for a visa for longer stays or other purposes |
| India | Visa waiver suspended since 22 November 2025 | Apply for an e-visa in advance on the MFA portal |
| Pakistan, Bangladesh | Visa required; not eligible for visa on arrival | E-visa in advance through the MFA portal |
| Most other countries | Visa required | E-visa in advance, or a visa collected at Shiraz airport after online pre-approval |
| USA, UK, Canada | Visa only for pre-booked guided tours | Arrange through a licensed Iranian tour operator |
The Shiraz airport visa is no longer a walk-up service: apply on the MFA portal first, choose Shiraz as the pick-up point and wait for approval — some airlines will not board you without it. Travel insurance is mandatory and is sold at the desk. Dual Iranian nationals must use their Iranian passport. And check your own government’s travel advice: several advise against travel to Iran in 2026.

0 of 7 readyIranians flying home from Oman: phones, customs and cash
Many Iranians who live in Oman fly home through Shiraz. Three rules matter:
- Declare a new phone at customs in the arrivals hall, before you leave it. Since 1405 a phone not declared on arrival cannot be registered as passenger baggage later. The limit is one per passenger per year; you then have 30 days to pay the duty — roughly 4% under €600, 15% up to €900 and 30% above, plus VAT and fees — and activate it. A phone already registered in Iran needs nothing.
- Gifts: personal-use goods are duty-free up to 80 US dollars per passenger, once a year.
- Cash: more than €10,000 must be declared on arrival; leaving Iran by air, you can take out up to €5,000 per person.
At Muscat International Airport
- Arrive three hours before departure — Muscat Airport’s own guidance for international flights.
- Check-in counters close 60 minutes before departure; after that you cannot be accepted, even with a ticket.
- Have your passport, visa approval and insurance ready — the airline checks Iran entry documents before boarding.
- Skip duty-free alcohol: alcohol is prohibited in Iran and will be confiscated at customs in Shiraz.
- Women should keep a headscarf in their hand luggage: Iranian law requires hair to be covered in public.
Arriving at Shiraz airport and getting into the city
International flights use Terminal 2 of Shiraz Shahid Dastgheib International Airport. After passport control, set your watch back 30 minutes. The arrivals hall usually has exchange booths, SIM kiosks and a 24-hour taxi desk; cash machines take Iranian cards only. The centre is about 8 km away. For flight information call 199 inside Iran or the airport on +98 71 3711 5000.
| Option | How it works | Approx. time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official airport taxi | 24-hour desk outside arrivals; fixed fare in cash, about 20% more from 22:30 to 06:00 | 20–25 min | Most travellers, late arrivals, heavy luggage |
| Ride-hailing (Snapp, Tapsi) | Needs an Iranian SIM and the app; pay the driver in cash | 20–25 min | Travellers who already have a local SIM |
| Metro Line 1 | Shahid Dastgheib station is 1.2 km from the terminal; trains about 06:00–22:00, ticket 8,000 tomans; Zandiyeh or Vakil-ol-Roaya for the old city | About 40 min including the walk | Light luggage and tight budgets |
| Hotel or private transfer | A pre-booked driver waits in arrivals | 20–25 min | Families, patients and first-time visitors |
Money, SIM cards and staying connected
Because of sanctions, Visa, Mastercard and other foreign cards do not work anywhere in Iran — not in shops, hotels or cash machines. Plan the whole trip in cash.
- Bring US dollars or euros and change them at licensed exchange offices, never on the street; Omani rials work too, but usually at a worse rate. On 1 October 2026 one Omani rial bought roughly 650,000–665,000 tomans and one dollar about 255,000 — check a live rate before you change money.
- Rial and toman: prices are usually quoted in tomans (1 toman = 10 rials), official prices often in rials.
- Tourist rial card: since an August 2026 Central Bank directive, visitors can buy a rechargeable card at entry points and licensed exchange offices, pay like a local and refund the balance in foreign currency when they leave.
- SIM cards: Irancell and MCI kiosks sell tourist SIMs on presentation of your passport, valid for 30 days; at last check MCI’s smallest tourist package was about 990,000 rials for 3 GB.
- Internet: WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram and YouTube are restricted in Iran. Download offline maps (or the local apps Neshan and Balad) before leaving Muscat, and agree another way for family to reach you.
- Power: bring an adapter for European two-pin sockets and a power bank for occasional power cuts. Emergency numbers: 110 police, 115 ambulance.
Shiraz in three days: a first-timer’s plan
Old Shiraz is walkable from Karim Khan Citadel, and Persepolis is an easy day trip. The historic sites reopened in March 2026 after the war-time closure; in autumn and winter most sell tickets from 07:30 to 17:00, while Hafezieh and Saadieh stay open into the evening.

| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 — Old Shiraz | Nasir al-Mulk Mosque at opening, when the morning sun lights the stained glass; then Vakil Bazaar, Vakil Mosque and Vakil Bath | Karim Khan Citadel and a tea break nearby | Hafezieh, the tomb of Hafez, at sunset |
| Day 2 — Persepolis | Persepolis, about 60 km away — go early, before the heat and the tour buses | The royal tombs of Naqsh-e Rostam, 6 km further; back in Shiraz by mid-afternoon | Faloodeh, Shiraz’s iced dessert, and a Shirazi dinner |
| Day 3 — Gardens and poets | Eram Garden, part of the Persian Garden UNESCO site | Saadieh, the tomb of Saadi, then Shah Cheragh shrine | The Quran Gate, lit up at night |
- Tickets: the last published foreigner prices were 2 to 3.5 million rials per site — well under one Omani rial today. No 1405 list has been published, so expect changes.
- Shah Cheragh: entry is free; foreign visitors are accompanied by a guide, and women are lent a chador at the entrance.
- Time your visit: Hafez Day (12 October) brings readings to Hafezieh; orange blossom scents the city in April.
Best time to visit Shiraz
At about 1,500 metres, Shiraz is dry and much cooler than Muscat — and its winter nights are colder than many Omani visitors expect.
| Season | Shiraz | Muscat | Our advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autumn (Oct–Nov) | Pleasant days, 20–28 °C; cool nights, 5–10 °C | Warm, 25–35 °C | A top season; bring a warm layer |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | Mild days, 13–16 °C; nights around 0 °C | Mild and sunny, 18–28 °C | Quiet and cheap; pack a jacket |
| Spring (Mar–May) | Mild to warm, 20–31 °C | Hot, 28–38 °C | The classic season; Nowruz (late March) is crowded |
| Summer (Jun–Sep) | Hot and dry, 34–39 °C by day | Very hot and humid, 35–45 °C | Sightsee early and late |
Medical travel to Shiraz from Oman
Shiraz treats about 7,000 international patients a year, according to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, and is best known for organ transplants, fertility treatment, heart and eye surgery and dentistry.
- Choose a licensed hospital. Only hospitals with an International Patient Department (IPD) licence may admit foreign patients; ask for it, and for a written quote in dollars or euros.
- Get the right visa. Patients who need a visa apply for the treatment (T) visa with their records and the hospital’s invitation; it can be extended for treatment.
- Plan the payment in cash or on the tourist rial card, which explicitly covers medical bills.
